The Chicago Teachers Union in Illinois is demanding a 9% annual raise for teachers. The median salary for a CPS teacher is close to six figures, at $95,000 annually. Meanwhile, 41% of Chicago Public School system teachers missed more than 10 days during the 2023-2024 school year, according to a new report. The demands for higher wages are particularly shocking, considering that less than a quarter of eighth-grade students are proficient readers, according to the Nation’s Report Card. Unfortunately, back in June, the president of the Chicago Teachers Union told a news radio host that conservatives do not want Black children to read, adding that it is “part of the oath they take to be right-wing.”

They often focus on promoting a mindset of low expectations for their students while simultaneously chasing personal financial gain.
