Maine School Board Watchlist: Regional School Unit 71 Votes Anti-Woman, Anti-Parent Policy into Schools
November 29, 2022
Belfast area’s school board has voted in a new policy that strips women of protection in the locker room and does not provide parents with a say over how their child should be referred to. The new transgender policy allows students to determine what gender they are and use the locker room/bathroom of their choice.
The Regional School Unit 71 board of directors approved the transgender and gender expansive students policy Monday night in a 5-3 vote. The policy codifies guidance on trans and gender expansive students’ rights to privacy, using the bathroom or locker room of their choice, requesting name or pronoun changes on nonlegal documents, handling instances of bullying or discrimination, and how to notify parents of these requests.
